Abstract
The objectives of this
descriptive study attempt to identify the level of knowledge of radiation
protection principles amongst Maltese radiographers and how they perceive the
adequacy of this knowledge and its acquisition.
The literature reviewed
revealed the importance of knowledge of this field and how this may be
affected. The provision of radiation protection regulations, the availability
of radiation protection devices and adequate education all play an important
role in the delivery of effective patient radiation protection. Radiographers,
due to the above reasons and the nature of their work, must be knowledgeable in
this field.
This research obtained data
on the knowledge and adequacy of pre- and post-registration education by means
of interviews. The chosen sample population included 9 respondents with
different levels of radiographic working experience.
From the quantitative and
qualitative data it appears that radiographers exhibit a general level of
knowledge of radiation protection principles but lack specific knowledge. The
study also indicated that in the past radiographers were not adequately prepared
to provide effective radiation protection. The implications of the study are
that further education and radiation protection regulations must be established. |
