Standards of Radiography Practice Workshop

7th - 8th December 2001

SRM entered the second phase of its planning process on the 7th and 8th December with an intensive two day workshop at the Corinthia Place Hotel, Attard.  18 radiographers participated in this 1st workshop to discuss further and finalise the Standards of Radiography Practice.  The purpose of these standards is to improve the quality of service to the population.  They give the practitioner, radiology administrators and the general public a measure of what good quality practice is.  These are developed with consensus by those working in the art and science of radiography.  They are a benchmark against which our practice could be assessed and needless to say, they also serve as tool to the reflective practitioners to improve their standards.

On the first day, the radiographers were divided into three groups.  Each group discussed one of the three sections that form the Standards of Practice.  These sections are Clinical performance, Quality performance and Professional performance.  On the second day, the three groups joined together to discuss the respective reports of each group.  Throughout the workshop, the participants also reflected on clinical factors that may hinder the standards.

Not coincidentally several concerns overlapped different sections and the participants looked at ways to address these concerns within the society's current resources.  Some ideas were innovative and the executive committee is very excited about the new direction that SRM is taking.  A direction that fulfills our mission "to enhance imaging careers through specialisation, education and networking".  Some of the suggestions include - radiography meetings, partnership in education, and participating with various imaging departments in the setup of quality assurance programmes.

As one participant put it "It was an enjoyable workshop, hard work, and hopefully the results will be great".

A special thanks goes to firm 'Joseph F Spiteri' for their support and to the staff at Corinthia Palace for their efficient organisation.
